NAMI Southwest Michigan continues to monitor the recommended State of Michigan’s mitigation precautions, as well as, the “re-opening” plans of Integrated Services of Kalamazoo (ISK).

Because these precautions and “re-opening” plans change, based upon the healthcare progress in addressing the COVID-19 outbreak in the State of Michigan and our community, by necessity NAMI Southwest Michigan programming plans must gradually change.

Accordingly, NAMI Southwest Michigan is continuing the cancellation of all scheduled Family Support Group meetings until June 1. This cancellation is effective for both our Kalamazoo and Portage Family Support Group meetings.

As in the past, we will continue to monitor the mitigation precautions, within both our community and state, and re-assess the practicality of holding meetings after June 1. Any changes will be posted on our website and Facebook pages.

At this point, the tentative “re-opening" plan, for the Integrated Services of Kalamazoo, is to reintegrate face-to-face services very slowly starting May 18. Their initial “re-opening” phase will not include small and large group meeting activities.

NAMI Southwest Michigan considers the health and safety of our members and community a top priority.

Please be safe and remember that the best prevention for any virus is to:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds.

  • Use hand sanitizer.

  • Disinfect surfaces and frequently touched items.

  • Avoid touching tour eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.

  • Cover your mouth and nose, with a tissue or upper sleeve, when coughing or sneezing.

  • If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others.

NAMI Family Support Groups, offered by NAMI affiliates in communities across the country, are FREE, confidential and safe groups of families helping other families who live with mental health challenges.  In NAMI Family Support Groups, participants join a caring group of people helping one another by utilizing their collective lived experiences and learned wisdom.  The Groups are facilitated by trained individuals, with the lived experience of loved ones who struggle with mental health challenges.

NAMI Southwest Michigan (formerly NAMI Kalamazoo) currently offers two (2) NAMI Family Support Groups:

  • At Integrated Services of Kalamazoo (ISK), located at 418 W. Kalamazoo   Ave. (Kalamazoo), on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:00pm, and

  • At Victory Baptist Church, located at 308 W. Milham Ave. (Portage), on the fourth Monday of each month from 6:30-8:00pm.

*  Registration is not required and the groups are FREE!  *

Consider trying a group if you’ve felt overwhelmed, confused, frustrated, sad, or stressed because someone you care about is suffering from a mental health issue. Come and find support in a place where you can speak freely with others who have faced similar experiences; as well as, achieve a renewed sense of hope.
